To Succeed, Think Abundance, Not Scarcity
The right mindset will help you attract and recognize opportunities for growth
"The greatest discovery of all time is that a person can change his future by merely changing his attitude." - Oprah Winfrey
“Life's a lot like poker. You bet on some hands, you fold some. You win some hands, you lose some. But unlike poker, life is not a zero sum game. There's enough chips in the pot for everyone.” ― Sanhita Baruah
"Abundance is an expansion of energy. Abundance is a form of gratitude, generosity, modesty, a bow toward others. What we can give, what we can share, rather than what we can take." - Terry Tempest Williams
In my early twenties I was quite shy around the ladies and struggled to ask anyone out.
Soon after however, I realized that there were millions of beautiful ladies out there. And so even if I faced rejection from one, there were many others. I also realized I needed to focus on growing myself and succeeding, rather than wasting my energies.
Interestingly, once I had this mindset shift, I rarely got rejections - in fact, I was the one who had to do the running, no longer the chasing.
I once had a business partner who liked to give. He gave freely of his knowledge and money and was loved by many. Of course he attracted people who just wanted to get from him, but he also attracted lots of business opportunities and loyalty which serves him well to this day.
Understanding the Scarcity Mindset
A scarcity mindset is an outlook on life that focuses on a lack of, or a belief that one has limited resources.
You can develop this due to poverty or financial troubles. If unchecked, it will lead you down the path of jealousy, fear, envy and prioritizing short-term gains over long-term growth and sustainability.
Bootstrapping my business came with a positive of us being profit focused from the onset. However it also came with a side effect of the scarcity mindset, which made it difficult for many years, to plan for the long term due to fear of running out of funds in the short term.
As we began to intentionally grow out of this mindset, we also began to experience transformative business growth.
Some more signs of having a scarcity mindset include always feeling behind others, trying to win at all costs / own all the benefits, or saying yes to opportunities that aren't right out of fear that you may not get another.
Breaking Out Into The Abundance Mindset
The right mindset will help you attract and recognize opportunities for growth when they show up around you.
You can intentionally develop this mindset by:
1) Realizing that you are running your own race. You will do your worst work when you are in competition mode, and you will be most creative when you are focusing on your own path and what you have.
The sky is big enough for everyone who desires, to fly.
As much as possible, create win-win situations in both your professional and personal life.
2) Practicing gratitude daily. Oprah Winfrey said, "If you look at what you have in life, you'll always have more. If you look at what you don't have in life, you'll never have enough".
It is difficult to be sad or fearful while also being grateful. It improves your mental well being and your state of happiness.
3) Practicing generosity. Whatever you think you can gain from hoarding ideas or opportunities, you will gain far more if you share with others.
That is why some of the most successful people are connectors and skilled at networking.
Have a positivity filled week!
