People Are Copying You

You become more mindful of your actions when you understand your influence.

“Never separate the life you live from the words you speak.” Paul Wellstone

“What you are speaks so loudly, I can’t hear what you are saying.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

“People may teach what they know, but they reproduce what they are.” — John C. Maxwell

My family and I enjoyed a breakfast buffet yesterday.

I noticed my son had taken the lemon and mint juice, just like I did.

I playfully asked him if he was copying me, and he actually said yes.

During a previous buffet, he tasted it from my cup and liked it.

He is a fan of Arsenal and Barcelona football clubs, thinks Messi is the football G.O.A.T and also enjoys reading and Maths.

I'm pretty sure you can guess where he got those from without needing more than one try.

I attempt to teach him many things as his father.

But I didn’t actively try to teach any of the above.

They have become an integral part of him because they are a part of me.

I’ve noticed that many people who work with me develop skills in critical thinking, persistence, and empathy.

I don't make them take critical thinking classes or have regular sit-down lessons.

They learn these by simply interacting, asking questions, and working together.

Be aware of how much influence you have on those around you.

Whether it's your organization, family, marriage, church, or any other community.

People are watching you.

Not just that. People are copying you.

The majority of the time, you have no say in whether or not they do it.

You are free to express yourself in words to them, but they have the choice of imitating your behavior.

Leadership is influence – Period.

Anyone who can influence others to act is a leader.

Leaders are easier to follow by simply copying their examples.

Leading by example communicates:

  • Strong work ethic: I’m not afraid to roll up my sleeves and get my hands dirty.

  • Accountability: I won’t ask you to do anything I wouldn’t do myself.

  • Humility: I’m not here trying to boss you around. I am just a person on a mission.

  • Unity: We’re in this together.

You become more mindful of your actions when you understand your influence.
